In commemoration of the International Day of Rural Women (15 October) and the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (17 October), UN Women is hosting an e-discussion on "Unequal unpaid care work keeps rural women poor and violates their rights - how do we respond?" on its Knowledge Gateway for Women's Economic Empowerment.
The discussion will run from 15 to 25 October 2013 and be moderated by MagdalenaSepulveda, UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights, together with Thalia Kidder, Senior Adviser on Women's Economic Rights, Oxfam GB; Rachel Moussie, Women's Economic Rights Coordinator, Action Aid International; Deepta Chopra, Social Policy Researcher, Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex; and Kate Donald, Adviser & Researcher, Office of Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights.
This e-discussion aims at:
- Bringing attention to UN Special Rapporteur's recommendations on unpaid care work and human rights to spur global conversations among development practitioners, policy makers, women's rights and youth organizations, and the private sector;
- Identifying key actions around policy and practice to recognize, reduce and redistribute women's unequal responsibility for unpaid care work in rural communities; and
- Developing joint efforts to advocate for increased visibility of rural women's unpaid care work issues during the 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women as well as the post-2015 development agenda.
