The Mashreq / Maghreb project is an adaptive research program for the development of
integrated crop/livestock in the low-rainfall areas of West Asia and North Africa. It
encompasses two WANA sub-regions: West Asia and North Africa. The project has evolved
from technology component testing to an integrated adaptive research comprising from
technical, socio-economic, cultural, institutional and policy perspective with the full
participation of all stakeholders: NARS, NGO, Farmers, development agencies, policy
makers, private sector, International Centers and donors. The project developed new and
innovative approaches to addressing the problems in an integrated manner. The adaptive
research has shifted from demonstration at a single farm to testing and evaluating technology
purchases at the community level involving community members, local institutions, NGO¿s
and private sector. Mechanisms developed to foster mature partnership among stakeholders,
program governance and major achievements are reviewed by this paper.
