The goal of the Project is to strengthen the institutional sustainability of agricultural
science and technology organizations in Latin America. Its purpose is to build conceptual,
methodological and technical capacities in the management of institutional change and innovation.

Universities in many developing countries have mandates and resources for research and they can
make significant contributions to agricultural and economic development. Yet university resources
are rarely fully utilized for development-oriented research. The study ¿Strengthening the Role of
Universities in the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) in Sub-Saharan Africa¿ was
designed to help universities improve their research performance and to optimize their collaboration
with other components of their national agricultural research system.

To provide improved methods to assess the impact of introduction and use of technology resulting from USAID
investments in agricultural research, a suite of integrated interactive models was created for use in developing
countries. Economic, environmental, and biophysical models were developed to provide a holistic evaluation of
the impact of new technology or policy options. Studies were conducted in East and West Africa. In this case
study, the impact in Mali of the introduction of shorter season higher yielding sorghum varieties, ridge tilling for

The proposal aims at improved capacity of farmers¿ organizations (FOs) to link-up with agricultural
research, mainly through staff training and networking.
Working methods and procedures will be worked out to identify potential research priorities on a
participatory basis with farmers, and to submit and advocate these priorities with relevant
national/regional research authorities. This may include assessment, by the farmers, of available
research results, and of their potentials for dissemination through farmer-to-farmer contacts.

The general objective of CERAAS is to propose plant varieties adapted
to drought, methods of analysis and decision-making tools, which contribute
to improving and/or stabilising agricultural production in arid and semi
arid zones. The classical methods of plant breeding have shown their limits
under conditions in which drought is becoming more and more severe and
multiform.

General objectives: 1) To help alleviate poverty and improve food security for more than 80 million people in 86 countries who depend directly on coconut production and processing for their livelihood.
