The 2021 UN Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) set the stage for global food systems transformation to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 and the 2023 UNFSS+2 Stocktaking event reviewed progress on its objectives. It concluded that `There is no shortage of ambition for food systems that combine the right to food with delivering the SDGs for everyone; there is tangible progress albeit much more remains to be done’.
In this GFAR Talk, our two speakers reflected on what progress has been achieved and what still needs to be done if the UNFSS is to achieve its goal of global food systems transformation.

Meet the speakers:
Joachim von Braun is Distinguished Professor for Economic and Technological change at Bonn University, in the Center for Development Research (ZEF). His research is on economic development, science and technology policy, poverty reduction, food and nutrition security, agriculture, resource economics, climate, and trade. von Braun is President of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences of the Vatican, and member of German National Academy of Science, the World Academy (TWAS), the African Academy of Sciences, and other academies. In 2020 and 2021 he served as Chair of the Scientific Group for the Food Systems Summit 2021 of the UN Secretary General. He is Vice President of the NGO WHH (Welthungerhilfe) and was director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) based in Washington DC. He published more than 250 peer reviewed publications.
Gabriela Quiroga Gilardoni holds a Master's Degree in International Development Studies from the University of Amsterdam, with a degree in Social Work from the Catholic University of Uruguay. She has more than 25 years of experience in rural innovation development action research, farmer-led innovation, multistakeholder partnerships and strategic advice for a wide variety of national and international organizations, both governmental and non-governmental.
Currently, she is the Director of Strategic Partnerships at AgriCord (an alliance of agri-agencies mandated by farmers’ organisations) where she contributes to bringing dynamism to the unique selling points of the AgriCord alliance and their agri-agency members who add value through knowledge and service provision to strategically positioning the alliance at the international level.
Before joining AgriCord, she was International Innovation Expert at IICA in Guatemala and Costa Rica actively collaborating in the Bioeconomy and the Climate Change Programmes. Before being in Central America, she was a member of the team of advisors on sustainable economic development of the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) based in Amsterdam and of the PROLINNOVA network (Promoting local innovation). Previously, she worked for the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) based in Paris, and she started her development career in Uruguay where she worked for 10 years as part of the technical cooperation team of the national federation of agricultural cooperatives (Cooperativas Agrarias Federadas - CAF).
