Dr Satyabrata Maiti has made a pioneering contribution in the area of medicinal and aromatic plants in general and betel vine in particular. He has developed two varieties and three hybrids of betel vine and the variety Bidhan Pan is very popular and in cultivation in large areas of West Bengal, Orissa and Assam. Vallabh-Medha, a new variety of Centella asiatica has been developed which gives 4-fold increase in alkaloid yield as well as biomass yield. His integrated crop management module incorporating crop, insect pest and disease management technologies has contributed to the sustained production of betel vine. He has to his credit seven unique germplasm lines: two of Chlorophytum borivilianum (INGR 04113, INGR 04114), two of Aloe barbadensis (INGR 06023, INGR 06024), one of Tinospora cordifolia (INGR 06025), one of Andrographis paniculata (INGR 07041) and one of Centella asiatica (INGR 08105).
