Since its first annual meeting on 9 November 2009, the 20th anniversary of the peaceful fall of the Berlin Wall, the Falling Walls Science Summit has continuously developed into a world forum for science. Some of the most important researchers and thinkers of our time gather at Falling Walls to discuss breakthroughs with global leaders in science, politics, business, and the media.
The Falling Walls Global Call is one of the largest world-wide searches for the most outstanding breakthroughs of the year across all the sciences. Take a look at last year’s breakthroughs and the brilliant minds behind the work.

The Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year laureates will present their groundbreaking research at the Falling Walls Science Summit in Berlin on 9 November 2023. They will also enhance their network as they interact with a wide range of stakeholders from science and society, including global science leaders such as Emmanuelle Charpentier, John Jumper, and Özlem Türeci.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
STEP 1: NOMINATION & APPLICATION
Submit your nomination and/or application for the Falling Walls Science Breakthrough of the Year from 1 March - 1 May 2023 on our online platform. We recommend submitting your nomination as early as possible, so the nominee is able to accept the nomination and submit further information about their project before the deadline.
STEP 2: SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT
Nominated projects and applicants will be asked to fill out information about themselves, and their project. Please note that applications have to be submitted in English.
STEP 3: EVALUATION PROCESS
Our distinguished juries and advisory boards will evaluate all applications and select winners for each category. Please visit our website to find out more about the respective selection process and criteria.
STEP 4: THE FALLING WALLS SCIENCE BREAKTHROUGHS OF THE YEAR
The juries will determine the Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of the Year from the Winners of each category. On 9 November, the Falling Walls Science Breakthroughs of the Year will receive the opportunity to present their work to a global audience on the grand Falling Walls stage in Berlin.
