This side event will present the conclusions of a webinar hosted by GFAR to discuss regional responses to challenges to soil fertility and sustainability – exploring alternatives to chemical fertilizers with a focus on Agroecology. This event will provide feedback to participants on the outcomes of the GFAR webinar held in February 2023, on Regional responses to challenges to soil fertility and sustainability that attracted some 360 participants from will be an opportunity to chart ways forward that explore alternatives to the use of chemical fertilizers and, specifically, the implementation of Agroecology approaches. Participants highlighted diverse perspectives and options for addressing soil fertility which need to be tailored to context. The webinar attracted more than 360 people from a wide range of countries, organizations and diverse stakeholders across six continents, including: GFAR Regional Fora; agricultural research institutes; farmers’ and producer organizations; youth representatives; and selected international and country level specialists and resource persons. Based on the webinar and this discussion during the AASW8, GFAR’s Steering Committee will consider the establishment of a new GFAR Collective Action on Agroecology to be implemented in collaboration with other key partners.
