Dr Satyabrata Maiti has made a pioneering contribution in the area of medicinal and aromatic plants in general and betel vine in particular. He has developed two varieties and three hybrids of betel vine and the variety Bidhan Pan is very popular and in cultivation in large areas of West Bengal, Orissa and Assam. Vallabh-Medha, a new variety of Centella asiatica has been developed which gives 4-fold increase in alkaloid yield as well as biomass yield.
