PROLINNOVA (PROmoting Local INNOVAtion in ecologically-oriented agriculture and natural
resource management) is an international initiative spearheaded by non-governmental
organisations (NGOs) seeking to 1) strengthen agricultural research and development (ARD)
partnerships and methods to promote local innovation processes in agriculture and NRM; and
2) integrate Participatory Innovation Development (PID) approaches that build on local
innovation into institutions of agricultural research, extension and education.
Many institutions involved in rural development, both locally and globally, are giving greater attention
to the indigenous knowledge (IK) of farmers. Researchers and practitioners in rural development now
see this not as a static asset but rather as a dynamic system of local experimentation and innovation
that forms the basis for sustainable development.
Organisations in Ethiopia that share this view of the strengths and potentials of IK and farmer-led
research and development (R&D) have taken the initiative to set up a multi-stakeholder platform for
The origins of the GPP on NTFPs for Livelihood Development go back to the GFAR
Conference in Dakar in 2003, which recommended activities in the area of Forestry and
Forest Ecosystems.
Currently the NTFP sector is characterized by: 1) Unregulated extraction. 2) Limited value addition at source. 3) Often many actors in production chains. 4) Lack of stakeholder organization and support infrastructure. 5) Minimal credibility of the sector amongst policy makers and investors. 6) Rapidly expanding global markets. A range of national and international meetings on NTFPs and most recently the meeting on Non-Wood Forest Products at the World Forestry Congress 2003 have drawn attention to a number of issues that need addressing.
Goal: sustainable enhancement of the livelihoods of NTFP collectors and producers. Outputs:
1. Action Research Partnership Sites (ARPS). 2. Strategic Research Programmes. 3. Global NTFP Information and Knowledge Repository. 4. Learning and Replication Support Services.
5. Equitable NTFP Supply Chains. 6. NTFP Awareness Creation, Advocacy and Policy Development. 7. Global NTFP Partnership Secretariat
