I would like to thank GFAR for the opportunity to attend its 2nd Triennial conference in Dakar in the
beautiful country of Senegal. On behalf of the entire Canadian delegation, it is a pleasure for us to be
here and to participate in the Conference discussions addressing the links of research and rural
innovation to sustainable development.
A Global Initiative to exploit biotechnology and animal genetic resources for the improvement of livestock productivity through control of trypanosomosis. Objectives: increase productivity through integrated control of trypanosomosis; poverty alleviation; improved food security.
"Objectives: In the late 1980¿s and early 1990¿s much of Rwanda, western Kenya and southwest Uganda experienced recurrent bean crop failures, which resulted in a declining trend in bean production. The latter was associated with increase in incidence and severity of root rots. In response to requests by farmers and local leadership for management solutions, research activities were developed with a broad objective to reduce on-farm yield losses due to root rots.
"Objectives: Minimize the erosion, the superficial runoff and the soil degradation, through the growth of soil cover crops and adoption of soil conservationist management systems with minimum or any soil plowing. To adapt and/or to develop, with technicians and farmers participation, soil conservationist management systems adapted to the soil climate and social-economic conditions of the state."
"The objective pursued [of RELACO] was to find the simplest and efficient way to communicate the most relevant knowledge, and experiences on conservation tillage to farmers, technicians, scientists, and decision makers in the countries of the region."
"Objectives: The RWC was convened in response to growing concerns about the sustainability of
rice-wheat systems in the Indo-Gangetic Plains. These systems are fundamental to food security,
incomes and employment to hundreds of millions of rural and urban poor in South Asia. The
objectives of the RWC are to help improve livelihoods and eliminate poverty through more
productive and sustainable agroecosystems based on the rice-wheat rotation, and to conserve
