GFAR Executive Secretary, Mark Holderness, spoke at a side event to the 26th Committee on Agriculture on October 3rd 2018. The panelists to the side event, entitled “The EU and FAO, Partners in Action for Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security”, showcased success stories of partnerships and programmes supported by the European Union and FAO. Mr Holderness gave an overview of GFAR's role and work as a dynamic network of diverse stakeholders, working to improve agri-food research and innovation for greater development impact.

New evidence in The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) 2018 confirms a rise in world hunger: the number of people who suffer from hunger has been growing over the past three years, returning to levels from almost a decade ago.

The reports says that climate variability and extremes are key drivers behind this rise, together with conflict and economic downturns, and are threatening to erode and reverse gains made in ending hunger and malnutrition.
