The main objectives were: 1) Identification of the fruit fly species present and understanding the complex taxonomy of tropical fruit flies. 2) Development of cheap and locally available protein bait materials for use in large-scale field control of the flies by protein bait spraying. 3) Training of partner national scientists and technicians in fruit fly and host plant identification, and
in fruit fly control methods. 4) Contribution to the development of regional control and trade protocols.

Objectives: to develop heat-resistant vaccines suitable for providing immunity to Newcastle disease in village chicken populations in Asia (and worldwide). The research has consisted of five large and small projects undertaken since 1984, which undertook the following activities: 1) Successful development of a thermostable vaccine for use in Malaysian villages. 2) Extension of vaccine trials to other Asian countries. 3) Development of a new non-commercialised seed vaccine for use in developing countries for making vaccine locally.

The tropical world is rich in raw materials that have potential demand in local and international markets.
Changing market trends and consumption habits are creating niches for exotic fruits, nuts, medicinal
plants, and organic raw materials, such as essential oils, natural colours, spices, and tannins. New
opportunities have also arisen for traditional commodities (involving new products from cassava,
sugarcane, and livestock) and for local seed production.

Agro-based small- and medium-scale enterprises are increasingly recognized for their
contribution to employment generation, food security and poverty reduction in developing
countries. However, globalization and liberalized domestic markets are transforming the global
agri-food economy. This transformation offers several new opportunities for both these
enterprises and smallholder farmers in developing countries. But it also poses significant threats
of exclusion and further impoverishment for those enterprises that cannot meet the exacting
