The 24th GFAR Steering Committee (SC) Meeting took place in Brussels, Belgium 28-29 September, 2010. Steering Committee members, led by the GFAR Chair Monty Jones, met to discuss the outputs, outcomes and follow up actions to GCARD which were suggested in the GCARD Synthesis Report and the Roadmap. The Committee also discussed the GFAR Plan of Work for 2010-2011 and the best way forward for GFAR to better meet the needs expressed in GCARD.  The SC members also elected Dr. Claudio Barriga as GFAR’s new Vice-Chair.

The Asian Federation of Information Technology Associations (AFITA) has held its International Conference on the theme “Quality Information for Competitive Agricultural Based Production Systems and Commerce”. I am sure you are aware that Bharat Krishak Samaj (Farmers’ Forum, India) serves the causes of all farmers and provide a useful platform to voice their opinions and views. Like the change in understanding of food security in India, BKS too has evolved, from a non-political, non-sectarian association of farmers and all those who are interested in the promotion of their welfare, to a unique platform that also advocates, singularly, the crucial need for India to focus on farmer-led economic growth.

The first Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development (GCARD) 2010 is just around the corner. It will be held in Montpellier, France from 28-31 March 2010.


The meeting is part of a massive and concerted effort to better align research processes with the needs of the poor, in particular poor farmers to meet the enormous development challenges we face and can foresee around the world.
