The world is on the move. More people have been forced to flee their homes than at any time since the Second World War due to increased conflict and political instability. But hunger, poverty, and an increase in extreme weather events linked to climate change are other important factors contributing to the migration challenge. FAO’s 2017 World Food Day theme, “Change the future of migration. Invest in food security and rural development”, emphasizes that by addressing some of the root causes of migration, we can give people choices.

GFAR participates in coordination with FAO in the GODAN Action project funded by DFID, with a leading role in the work on data standards.

GODAN Action activities under the Standards focal area in 2017 focused on weather data standards, with special attention to those relevant for use in farm management systems.

GFAR themes 2013

Last week the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) was held in Abidjan, hosted by H.E. Alassane Ouattara, President of Côte d’Ivoire. The Forum was attended by more than 1300 delegates and many high level dignitaries. On the agenda were the announcement of concrete investments in agricultural businesses and the establishment of new and innovative approaches and partnerships to deliver programmes for greater results.

In order to keep up with the challenges of ensuring nutrition for growing populations, the need for specific and reliable data to mitigate risks to agriculture from climate change, and to include smallholder farmers as stakeholders in the data revolution, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), India recently launched ‘FarmerZone’.

In June 2017 the members of the GFAR Steering Committee met for a dynamic three-day strategic workshop to set out their ideas for the actions the Partners in GFAR will take together to improve agri-food research and innovation towards achieving sustainable development.
